CHAPTER 14
Angel and her father pulled into the driveway. Phoenix hastily put the bike into park. Before he could Angel was already off it and running toward the house. Bree was walking past her with a box of pantry items. Angel grabbed her motherâs urn from the fireplace and placed it inside. She then ran up the staircase to her room, nearly tripping over Mittens who was confused with all the chaos.
Mittens went to run out the front door, but Phoenix caught her before she bolted out. He placed her inside his vest and zipped it up and kept her safe until Bree could come claim her. She settled in the best she could, but Phoenix would still be the victim of claw marks.
Angel threw duffle bags down from the top landing onto the floor below. She threw down a total of two. So far. Phoenix could tell they were hers. Purple Canvas. Purple was her favorite color at one point. The next thing he saw was a barrage of bright pink ones⦠those must have been Eclipses. They matched the streak of pink she had in her hair.
Two smaller bags came down next. He hoped there was nothing breakable in them. Someone would not be happy. He assumed they were for socks and unmentionables. She learned from someone how to pack in a hurry. Angel carried smaller tote bags with her down the stairs, a laptop bag and what looked to be a book bag of some kind.
âGeezus⦠pack enough shit?â
âDaddy, I learned from Momma. My two have all my clothes. My duplicates are here. The smaller one is full of unmentionables. The rest is my laptop and a few books.â
âOkay, so what of the pink ones?â
âOh, itâs the basics for Eclipse. Sheâs gonna be mad. I didnât pack everything. Weâd be here forever.â
High maintenance. Good to know. At least Matrix did nothing stupid. He already had one like that back home. He could not imagine another. Angel started carrying the stuff to the van. Pyroâs bike was placed properly and tied down appropriately. The girls knew their shit when it came down to it. As instructed the containers holding clothing and softer items were put towards the back with the bike. The Heavy pantry items were placed further front. Bree came out with assorted cat food, both wet and dry, cat toys and the cat carrier. She took Mittens out of the vest of Phoenix and gingerly placed her in the carrier. She was not happy but settled down more.
They made excellent time. Within the hour they had everything they needed. Angel drove the van and Phoenix followed on his bike. Before they made it down the road to the highway, a car was coming in the other direction in a hurry. It sped passed the van and went straight for the house. Phoenix dialed Angel via voice dial, his Bluetooth was hooked up to his phone.
âWho the fuck was that?â
âThat was James. It wonât be long before he figures out itâs us.
